A special episode of The Simpsons led to a surge in NFT trading, and an unauthorised collection of Springfield Punks, combining CryptoPunks aesthetics with elements of the series, won first place on OpenSea. The collection, created by self-proclaimed parody artist Rino Russo, generated over $2.4 million sales in less than 24 hours. The minimum price (floor price) of the collection has increased significantly.

• On Monday at OpenSea  there were several NFT collections competing for attention, all of which appear to take inspiration from The Simpsons.

After the long-running animated TV show The Simpsons mocked NFT in a special episode of Treehouse of Horror XXXIV, the NFT collection, which combines the aesthetic of CryptoPunks with elements of The Simpsons, quickly gained popularity. It topped the trends on OpenSea, garnering almost $2.5 million  in sales in less than 24 hours.

On Sunday, the unauthorised Springfield Punks collection emerged as a free mint and traders promptly redeemed 3,405 Ethereum NFT. OpenSea shows that the project has since changed hands for 1,311 ETH, representing more than $2.4 million. On the secondary market, NFT from Springfield Punks are currently being offered for just under 0.11 ETH, which equates to around $200.

Springfield Punks, a self-proclaimed artist using parody, launched on Sunday night. The group was founded by Rino Russo. At the moment, the daily collection volume is second only to Bored Ape Yacht Club (2,412 ETH) and CryptoPunks (1,893 ETH).

Monday’s OpenSea rivalled several collections of NFTs, including SimpsPunks, which appears to be inspired by The Simpsons. Other animation-related initiatives occupying space on the main OpenSea website include The Chimpsons Official and Springfield Apes by Rino Russo.

The cult comedy, known for its doughnuts, beer and blue crazy hairstyles, presents products reminiscent of many existing NFT with profile pictures (PFP). Thousands of ape-like creatures have kaleidoscopic graphics referencing Simpson.

Despite the fact that The Chimpsons Official was launched in September last year, its popularity soared after Sunday’s special cut premiered. According to OpenSea, it has since generated around 600 sales of 6,996 Chimpsons. The base price of the collection, or the cheapest NFT that is up for grabs, rose expressly overnight, from ETH 0.03 (US$6) to ETH 0.44 (US$840).

Sunday’s episode of The Simpsons honoured several well-known NFT collections, such as Beeple’s Everydays: the First 5000 Days, but two notable projects – Bored Ape Yacht Club and CryptoPunks – received notable episodes.

Although the programme has touched on the subject of NFTs in the past, officially licensed NFTs from The Simpsons have not been released with the latest Treehouse of Horror episode. Instead, Disney had already introduced NFT Homer, Bart and his skateboards to the VeVe market in 2021 to celebrate the debut of Disney+.
