China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has formed a working group to establish metaverse standards, aiming to standardise concepts and keep pace with global development. The group will create general and technical standards, including for the creation of digital content and identity systems. The ministry also addresses concerns about online violence and privacy.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced on Monday that it would set up a working group to establish metaverse standards, as without this, metaverse issues would worsen.

According to MIIT, Beijing’s latest legislative initiative aims to accelerate the standardisation of what is the metaverse and keep up with the pace of global development.

The working group will consist of specialists from companies, academic institutions and undisclosed metaverse experts.

The group’s tasks will include the creation of basic generic standards such as  metaverse nomenclature and reference architectures, as well as important technical standards such as the creation of digital content, metaverse identity systems and interoperability between domains.

The first task is to create metaverse standards for industrial manufacturing. Earlier this month, the MIIT stated that the development of a metaverse industrial will in particular change the manufacturing sector, which it describes as „one of the important points of the new industrialisation”.

The comment was made when MIIT presented its three-year vision metaverse. Standard setting will therefore be a key activity. MIIT identified the metaverse as one of several IT sectors in which China will strive for global leadership.

The ministry also published a three-part response plan, one of which included improving the industrial standardisation framework. The other two were the creation of world-class infrastructure and enhancing capacity to support innovation.

The ministry has expressed concern about online violence, the expansion of digital identities, the use of sensitive personal data in the metaverse world and similar issues. Poor information security is also a concern.

The development of the metaverse sector is somewhat limited because „some capitals and companies have used the popularity of the metaverse to speculate, resulting in its concept being far from its real value”, according to MIIT.
