Spotify is testing a new feature that allows users to create playlists using artificial intelligence (Al) prompts. The feature creates Al playlists based on listener requests, similar to ”Niche Mixes„. The Al playlists feature can be combined with Blend, another feature that allows other listeners to collaborate on the creation of playlists. Spotify explores services based on Al, including Al DJ and voice translation.

Creating playlists on Spotify seems simple enough: just select a few songs from your favourite genres, name them and you’re done! But this is not even close to the truth. Everyone has spent hours creating playlists for a trip or an upcoming event, painstakingly going through each song before adding it to a new list. But what if all we had to do was follow a few steps and the playlist would be ready to use? According to reports, Spotify is testing a new feature that allows playlists to be created using artificial intelligence cues. This could soon become a reality.

Changes to music playlists

According to an article published on TechCrunch, Spotify has begun testing a playlist creation feature using artificial intelligence on its platform. Technology expert Chris Messina discovered the feature in the code of the app. The code generates AI playlists, which in turn create further playlists based on user suggestions. This differs from Spotify’s previously introduced “Niche Mixes”. Niche Mixes use algorithms and not AI to create playlists based on favourite music genres, moods, and occasions, and still work.

On the other hand, the playlist Al function would select playlists in response to listener requests. The coding also suggests that other listeners may be invited to collaborate in the creation of a playlist Al, so Messina believes that the playlist Al function could be combined with another Spotify function called Blend.

For some time now, Spotify has been exploring services based on Al on its platform. The music streaming service launched Al DJ in February. It is a personalised Al guide that plays your favourite songs and mimics radio stations using the voice of Al. It also tested the Voice Translation feature, which preserves the original voice of the podcaster when translating podcasts into other languages.

Ziad Sultan, head of personalisation at Spotify, told TechCrunch at an event earlier this year that the company has a dedicated team focused on exploring all possibilities related to large language models, generative voice, and personalisation.

Note that not every feature present in the code is implemented in its final form. It does, however, provide an opportunity to observe how the major technology giants use AI  to improve their offerings.
