Mastercard just cleared one of the hardest regulatory hurdles in U.S. crypto, with its US transaction services unit receiving a BitLicense from New York’s top financial regulator. The Mastercard BitLicense crypto approval gives the company legal authority to conduct digital asset business in New York, a state where crypto licensing standards are famously strict.
That matters because Mastercard is not using the approval to launch a flashy new retail coin app or a consumer trading feature. Instead, it is aiming at the plumbing: payment and settlement infrastructure tied to stablecoins and tokenized deposits.
